Bow and Arrow
THROUGHOUT THE TIME OF ANCIENT GREECE, THE TROJAN WAR, AND EVEN HISTORY IN GENERAL, BOWS AND ARROWS HAVE BEEN USED GREATLY IN MANY DIFFERENT WARS. BOWS AND ARROWS HAVE BEEN KNOWN AS SOME OF THE EARLIEST WEAPONS OF WAR AND WERE USED IN WAR MANY TIMES BECAUSE OF THEIR EFFECTIVENESS. THEY PROVIDED A FAIRLY LONG SHOOTING RANGE AS WELL AS A PAINFUL STRIKE IF THE ARROW WERE TO HIT THE ENEMY. WITH SOME OF THIS BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT BOWS AND ARROWS ARE, THIS WILL HELP PROVIDE A MORE SPECIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF BOWS DURING THE TIME OF ANCIENT GREECE AND THE TROJAN WAR.
THE BOW IN THE ANCIENT GREEK TIMES SUPPOSEDLY WAS INTRODUCED DURING THE NEOLITHIC PERIOD. BESIDES JUST BEING A USEFUL WEAPON IN WAR, THE BOW WAS ALSO A WEAPON CONVENIENT FOR HUNTERS BECAUSE OF THE RANGE IT PROVIDED. THE BOW DURING THE ANCIENT GREEK TIMES WAS ASSEMBLED WITH DIFFERENT MATERIALS AS TIME WENT ON. ONE OF THE FIRST BOWS USED IN THE AEGEAN BRONZE AGE WAS A WOODEN BOW. THIS BOW WAS MERELY MADE OUT OF WOOD AND NOTHING ELSE.
ANOTHER BOW THAT WAS INTRODUCED IN THE AEGEAN BRONZE AGE WAS THE COMPOSITE BOW. THE COMPOSITE BOW COMPRISED OF NUMEROUS MATERIALS INCLUDING WOOD, DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF ANIMAL HORNS, ANIMAL TENDONS, SINEWS, AND GLUE.
IN ADDITION TO THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS THAT COMPOSE A BOW, THERE ARE ALSO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOWS. THESE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOWS CONSIST OF THE SIMPLE CURVED BOW, THE DOUBLE-CONVEX BOW, THE DOUBLE-CONCAVE BOW, AND THE TRIANGULAR BOW.
WHILE THE BOW IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE BOW AND ARROW, THE ARROW ALSO PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN THE USE OF THE BOW AND ARROW. THE ARROW PROVIDED THE BOW THE ABILITY TO PIERCE AND KILL AN ENEMY AS WELL ESPECIALLY AT A FURTHER DISTANCE WHERE SWORDS WOULD BE USELESS. THE STRUCTURE OF THE ARROW HAS THREE MAIN PARTS INCLUDING THE BODY, THE TAIL AND THE HEAD. THE BODY OF THE BOW IS THE MIDDLE PART OF THE BOW AND WAS USUALLY CONSTRUCTED OUT OF WOOD OR REED DURING THE ANCIENT GREEK TIMES. THE TAIL IS USED TO KEEP THE ARROW FLYING IN A STRAIGHT PATH AND WAS USUALLY CONSTRUCTED OUT OF FEATHERS IN THE ANCIENT GREEK TIMES. FINALLY, THE HEAD IS USED TO PIERCE THE OPPONENT’S BODY AND WAS USUALLY CONSTRUCTED OUT OF VERY HARD SUBSTANCES SUCH AS FLINT, STEEL, OR BONE AT THE TIME OF ANCIENT GREECE.

"He snatched a winged arrow lying bare on the board-- the rest still bristled deep inside the quiver, soon to be tasted by all the feathers there, Setting shaft on the handgrip, drawing the notch and bowstring back, but.. right from his stool, just as he sat but aiming straight and true, he let fly-- and never missing an ax fron the first ax-handle clean on through to the last and out the shaft with its weighted brazen head shot free!"
Page 439 line 1:
"Now stripping back his rags Odysseus master of craft and battle vaulted onto the great threshold, gripping his bow and quiver bristling arrows, and poured his flashing shafts before him... But Odysseus aimed and shot Antinous square in the throat."
